Intermatix Phosphor Opens Doors for LED Lighting

Intematix today announced an component designed to improve LED lighting efficiency and give light fixture manufacturers more flexibility in adjusting light qualities.

The Fremont, Calif.-based company announced its ChromaLit product line, which offers a separate phosphor component that converts the blue light of LED light sources into pleasing white light.

Phosphors, which are compounds with inherent luminescence, are used for all LED light fixtures and bulbs. They are generally in a powder form that is directly coated onto LED light sources, which are semiconductors that emit light when electricity is passed through them.

By contrast, ChromaLit is a separate, disk-shaped component. According to Intematix, this allows for LED light fixtures with more possible shapes, including three-dimensional and curved LED light fixtures.

A separate phosphor component is also up to 30 percent more energy efficient, and manufacturers can swap in various phosphor components on the same LED light source to create products with a different color temperature and color rendering index.

Having a separate phosphor component can extend the life and performance of LEDs, Intematix CEO Mark Swoboda told Scientific American. That’s because phosphor coating on an LED light source often reflects much of the light back toward the semiconductor light source. By contrast, a layered design means that reflected light can still be emitted around the sides of the phosphor component.

The company is targeting ChromaLit at LED light fixture manufacturers in both the commercial and residential markets.

In a compact 5-mm x 5-mm footprint, XM-L LEDs offer the unique combination of very high efficacy at very high drive currents, delivering light output and efficacy of 160 lumens per watt at 350 mA and up to 315 lumens and 150 lumens per watt at 700 mA, providing a 20-percent efficiency gain from the Cree current industry-leading XLamp XP-G LEDs.

Macy’s Goes Green with MSi LEDs

MSi Deploys Cypress LED Controllers in Macy’s Stores

Cypress Semiconductor Corporation, a provider of enhanced mixed-signal, programmable solutions that provide customers with rapid time-to-market and exceptional system value, has announced that MSi, a provider of application specific solid-state lighting products has deployed its Light Emitting Diode (LED) power controller inside the LED replacement lamps implemented within Macy’s stores around the country.

Macy has decided to replace around 117,000 traditional incandescent light bulbs in 86 stores within its chain, with new LED lamps. The new lamps use around 73 percent less energy in comparison to the traditional incandescent light bulbs, and installing the new lamps will help Macy in saving around 16,200 megawatts per hour every year, which is equal to plant over 65,500 trees in terms of energy conservation. While the traditional bulbs have an expected life of less than one year, the LED lamps offer uninterrupted services for around 10 years and also cut down the landfill disposal considerably.

“Many retailers are a little concerned about the initial investment of converting to LED lighting,” commented said Bruce Johnson, managing partner at MSi. “But if they take the time to run the numbers as Macy’s has, they’ll see that switching over produces a tremendous return on their investment.”

As more and more enterprise and retail customers worldwide have been adopting the LED lamps, Cypress provides a wide range of lighting solutions that enable the users in controlling the way their LED lamps function. These solutions comprise of stand-alone AC-DC Power Controllers for LED retrofits, and PowerPSoC, a programmable power controller that integrates onboard power regulation and power drive with a microcontroller capable of 16-bit dimming to full custom color mixing, and offers enhanced levels of intelligent integration. The company has developed temperature or optical feedback algorithms, which can be incorporated with selected designs to reduce the design time by several weeks’ duration. Additionally, it provides communication resources such as wireless and Powerline solutions as an alternative to expensive rewiring.

In September 2010, Cypress Semiconductor announced that it released a new CapSense capacitive touch-sensing controller that will help designers to attain mechanical button replacement without the need to code new firmware or learn new software.
